Eastern Divisional Kids Make Championships

Laconia, N.H. — The top young anglers and casters of New England and Canada squared off today in two contests at Lake Winnipesaukee.

The Junior Bassmaster program held its first Eastern Divisional to qualify youngsters for the Junior World Championship (JWC) and CastingKids contestants from seven states and a Canadian province competed in an Eastern Divisional to earn berths to the CastingKids Championship. Both the JWC and CastingKids Championship will be held in conjunction with the Federation Nation Championship Nov. 3-8 at Milford Lake in Kansas.

The Junior Bassmaster divisional competitors and their boat captains (the adult state and provincial winners of the BASS Federation Nation Eastern Divisional) had to wait about 2 1/2 hours before taking off due to thick fog. Maine angler Brian Volkernick won the 11-14 year-olds age group and Jake Sasnowski of Ontario, Canada, claimed top honors in the 15-18 age division. Volkernick caught two bass weighing 5 pounds, 5 ounces, while Sasnowski weighed in four bass totaling 8 pounds, 8 ounces.

Fifteen youngsters competed in the Eastern Divisional CastingKids contest preceding the weigh-in of the Junior Bassmaster divisional. Jacob Love of Ogdensburg, N.Y., recorded a score of 140 to win the 7-10 age group and qualify for the nationals. Mitchell Blanchard of Worcester, Mass., scored a 130 to top the 11-14 age division competitors.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. — It was a day of repeat championships for BASS' youth competitors. Joey Nania claimed a second Junior Bassmaster World Championship title, this time in the 15-18-year-old age group at Geary County State Lake, meanwhile Jonny Schultz defended his Bassmaster CastingKids Championship at Junction City High School.

The 12 JWC anglers qualified for the championship event, two from each of the six Federation Nation divisions. The 12 junior competitors are split into two age groups, 11-14 and 15-18. All Junior Bassmaster World Championship contenders will receive academic college scholarship awards, with the top angler in each age division receiving a $5,000 scholarship. Read Full Article
